Cumberland Wood Products sign Letter of Understanding with Prince Albert Pulp Inc.

[Prince Albert, BC] – Cumberland Wood Products and Prince Albert Pulp announced today the signing of a Letter of Understanding that sets out the intentions of all parties to build a collaborative relationship with each other in Saskatchewan.

“Cumberland House Cree Nation is pleased to acknowledge the working relationship with Prince Albert Pulp and Cumberland Wood Products and their efforts supporting the reopening of the mill in Prince Albert.,” said Chief Rene Chaboyer of the Cumberland House Cree Nation, “We welcome our partnership in the support of fibre supply and operations that lead to our mutual benefit; guided by a ecosystem management plan for the Saskatchewan River Delta and the sustainable use of its resources.”

“This is a key step in building our relationship with the Cumberland House Cree Nation and we are pleased to be on this path together,’ said Carlo Dal Monte, Vice President, Energy and Business Development at Paper Excellence. “We are beginning important work with our valued downstream neighbours focused on environmental stewardship and industrial opportunities related to the restart of the Prince Albert mill.”

Paper Excellence already operates one mill in Saskatchewan at Meadow Lake and is working to restart its other operation at Prince Albert. “The signing of this Letter of Understanding signals our desire to continue building Indigenous relationships in the province,” added Dal Monte.

As well as taking another positive step towards reopening the Prince Albert mill, this initiative also supports one of the 20 Actions for 2030 in Saskatchewan’s Growth Plan: “Growing Indigenous participation in the economy through the growth of Saskatchewan’s natural resource industries and labour market development.” “Paper Excellence values the support of the Saskatchewan government,” said Dal Monte. “We are glad that the signing of this Letter of Understanding dovetails so well with Saskatchewan’s growth strategy.”
